baedh pukaarai mukh thae pa(n)ddath kaamaaman kaa maat(h)aa ||
The Pandit, the religious scholar, proclaims the Vedas, but he is slow to act on them.

monee hoe bait(h)aa eikaa(n)thee hiradhai kalapan gaat(h)aa ||
Another person on silence sits alone, but his heart is tied in knots of desire.

hoe oudhaasee grihu thaj chaliou shhuttakai naahee naat(h)aa ||1||
Another becomes an Udaasi, a renunciate; he abandons his home and walks out on his family, but his wandering impulses do not leave him. ||1||

jeea kee kai pehi baath kehaa ||
Who can I tell about the state of my soul?

Where can I find such a person who is liberated, and who can unite me with my God? ||1||Pause||

thapasee kar kai dhaehee saadhhee manooaa dheh dhis dhhaanaa ||
Someone may practice intensive meditation, and discipline his body, but his mind still runs around in ten directions.

brehamachaar brehamachaj keenaa hiradhai bhaeiaa gumaanaa ||
The celibate practices celibacy, but his heart is filled with pride.

sa(n)niaasee hoe kai theerathh bhramiou ous mehi krodhh bigaanaa ||2||
The Sannyaasi wanders around at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, but his mindless anger is still within him. ||2||
 
GUMGr bwiD Bey rwmdwsw rotIAn ky Epwvw ]
ghoo(n)ghar baadhh bheae raamadhaasaa rotteean kae oupaavaa ||
The temple dancers tie bells around their ankles to earn their living.

barath naem karam khatt keenae baahar bhaekh dhikhaavaa ||
Others go on fasts, take vows, perform the six rituals and wear religious robes for show.

geeth naadh mukh raag alaapae man nehee har har gaavaa ||3||
Some sing songs and melodies and hymns, but their minds do not sing of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||

harakh sog lobh moh rehath hehi niramal har kae sa(n)thaa ||
The Lord’s Saints are immaculately pure; they are beyond pleasure and pain, beyond greed and attachment.

thin kee dhhoorr paaeae man maeraa jaa dhaeiaa karae bhagava(n)thaa ||
My mind obtains the dust of their feet, when the Lord God shows mercy.

kahu naanak gur pooraa miliaa thaa(n) outharee man kee chi(n)thaa ||4||
Says Nanak, I met the Perfect Guru, and then the anxiety of my mind was removed. ||4||

My Sovereign Lord is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

eae sareeraa maeriaa eis jag mehi aae kai kiaa thudhh karam kamaaeiaa ||
O my body, why have you come into this world? What actions have you committed?

ik krm kmwieAw quDu srIrw jw qU jg mih AwieAw ]
k karam kamaaeiaa thudhh sareeraa jaa thoo jag mehi aaeiaa ||
And what actions have you committed, O my body, since you came into this world?

ijin hir qyrw rcnu ricAw so hir min n vswieAw ]
jin har thaeraa rachan rachiaa so har man n vasaaeiaa ||
The Lord who formed your form – you have not enshrined that Lord in your mind.

gur prswdI hir mMin visAw pUrib iliKAw pwieAw ]
gur parasaadhee har mann vasiaa poorab likhiaa paaeiaa ||
By Guru’s Grace, the Lord abides within the mind, and one’s pre-ordained destiny is fulfilled.

kehai naanak eaehu sareer paravaan hoaa jin sathigur sio chith laaeiaa ||35||
Says Nanak, this body is adorned and honored, when one’s consciousness is focused on the True Guru. ||35||

eae naethrahu maeriho har thum mehi joth dhharee har bin avar n dhaekhahu koee ||
O my eyes, the Lord has infused His Light into you; do not look upon any other than the Lord.

hir ibnu Avru n dyKhu koeI ndrI hir inhwilAw ]
har bin avar n dhaekhahu koee nadharee har nihaaliaa ||
Do not look upon any other than the Lord; the Lord alone is worthy of beholding.

eyhu ivsu sMswru qum dyKdy eyhu hir kw rUpu hY hir rUpu ndrI AwieAw ]
eaehu vis sansaar thum dhaekhadhae eaehu har kaa roop hai har roop nadharee aaeiaa ||
This whole world which you see is the image of the Lord; only the image of the Lord is seen.

gur prswdI buiJAw jw vyKw hir ieku hY hir ibnu Avru n koeI ]
gur parasaadhee bujhiaa jaa vaekhaa har eik hai har bin avar n koee ||
By Guru’s Grace, I understand, and I see only the One Lord; there is no one except the Lord.

kehai naanak eaehi naethr andhh sae sathigur miliai dhib dhrisatt hoee ||36||
Says Nanak, these eyes were blind; but meeting the True Guru, they became all-seeing. ||36||

eae sravanahu maeriho saachai sunanai no pathaaeae ||
O my ears, you were created only to hear the Truth.

swcY sunxY no pTwey srIir lwey suxhu siq bwxI ]
saachai sunanai no pathaaeae sareer laaeae sunahu sath baanee ||
To hear the Truth, you were created and attached to the body; listen to the True Bani.

ijqu suxI mnu qnu hirAw hoAw rsnw ris smwxI ]
jith sunee man than hariaa hoaa rasanaa ras samaanee ||
Hearing it, the mind and body are rejuvenated, and the tongue is absorbed in Ambrosial Nectar.

sach alakh viddaanee thaa kee gath kehee n jaaeae ||
The True Lord is unseen and wondrous; His state cannot be described.

khY nwnku AMimRq nwmu suxhu pivqR hovhu swcY sunxY no pTwey ]37]
kehai naanak anmrith naam sunahu pavithr hovahu saachai sunanai no pathaaeae ||37||
Says Nanak, listen to the Ambrosial Naam and become holy; you were created only to hear the Truth. ||37||

har jeeo gufaa andhar rakh kai vaajaa pavan vajaaeiaa ||
The Lord placed the soul to the cave of the body, and blew the breath of life into the musical instrument of the body.

vjwieAw vwjw paux nau duAwry prgtu kIey dsvw gupqu rKwieAw ]
vajaaeiaa vaajaa poun no dhuaarae paragatt keeeae dhasavaa gupath rakhaaeiaa ||
He blew the breath of life into the musical instrument of the body, and revealed the nine doors; but He kept the Tenth Door hidden.

gurduAwrY lwie BwvnI ieknw dsvw duAwru idKwieAw ]
guradhuaarai laae bhaavanee eikanaa dhasavaa dhuaar dhikhaaeiaa ||
Through the Gurdwara, the Guru’s Gate, some are blessed with loving faith, and the Tenth Door is revealed to them.

theh anaek roop naao nav nidhh this dhaa anth n jaaee paaeiaa ||
There are many images of the Lord, and the nine treasures of the Naam; His limits cannot be found.

kehai naanak har piaarai jeeo gufaa andhar rakh kai vaajaa pavan vajaaeiaa ||38||

eaehu saachaa sohilaa saachai ghar gaavahu ||
Sing this true song of praise in the true home of your soul.

gaavahu th sohilaa ghar saachai jithhai sadhaa sach dhhiaavehae ||
Sing the song of praise in your true home; meditate there on the True Lord forever.

sco iDAwvih jw quDu Bwvih gurmuiK ijnw buJwvhy ]
sacho dhhiaavehi jaa thudhh bhaavehi guramukh jinaa bujhaavehae ||
They alone meditate on You, O True Lord, who are pleasing to Your Will; as Gurmukh, they understand.

iehu scu sBnw kw Ksmu hY ijsu bKsy so jnu pwvhy ]
eihu sach sabhanaa kaa khasam hai jis bakhasae so jan paavehae ||
This Truth is the Lord and Master of all; whoever is blessed, obtains it.

kehai naanak sach sohilaa sachai ghar gaavehae ||39||
Says Nanak, sing the true song of praise in the true home of your soul. ||39||

Andu suxhu vfBwgIho sgl mnorQ pUry ]
anadh sunahu vaddabhaageeho sagal manorathh poorae ||
Listen to the song of bliss, O most fortunate ones; all your longings shall be fulfilled.

pwrbRhmu pRBu pwieAw auqry sgl ivsUry ]
paarabreham prabh paaeiaa outharae sagal visoorae ||
I have obtained the Supreme Lord God, and all sorrows have been forgotten.

dhookh rog santhaap outharae sunee sachee baanee ||
Pain, illness and suffering have departed, listening to the True Bani.

santh saajan bheae sarasae poorae gur thae jaanee ||
The Saints and their friends are in ecstasy, knowing the Perfect Guru.

suxqy punIq khqy pivqu siqguru rihAw BrpUry ]
sunathae puneeth kehathae pavith sathigur rehiaa bharapoorae ||
Pure are the listeners, and pure are the speakers; the True Guru is all-pervading and permeating.

bidhiaa n paro baadh nehee jaano ||A
I do not read books of knowledge, and I do not understand the debates.

har gun kathhath sunath bouraano ||1||
I have gone insane, chanting and hearing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||

myry bwbw mY baurw sB Klk sYAwnI mY baurw ]
maerae baabaa mai bouraa sabh khalak saiaanee mai bouraa ||
O my father, I have gone insane; the whole world is sane, and I am insane.

mY ibgirE ibgrY miq Aaurw ]1] rhwau ]
mai bigariou bigarai math aouraa ||1|| rehaao ||
I am spoiled; let no one else be spoiled like me. ||1||Pause||

Awip n baurw rwm kIE baurw ]
aap n bouraa raam keeou bouraa ||
I have not made myself go insane – the Lord made me go insane.

siqguru jwir gieE BRmu morw ]2]
sathigur jaar gaeiou bhram moraa ||2||
The True Guru has burnt away my doubt. ||2||

mai bigarae apanee math khoee ||
I am spoiled; I have lost my intellect.

Let no one go astray in doubt like me. ||3||

so bouraa jo aap n pashhaanai ||
He alone is insane, who does not understand himself.

Awpu pCwnY q eykY jwnY ]4]
aap pashhaanai th eaekai jaanai ||4||
When he understands himself, then he knows the One Lord. ||4||

Abih n mwqw su kbhu n mwqw ]
abehi n maathaa s kabahu n maathaa ||
One who is not intoxicated with the Lord now, shall never be intoxicated.

Says Kabeer, I am imbued with the Lord’s Love. ||5||2||
